FAQ

Straight answers.

How the listings, the audit, the reports and the plans actually work. If your question is not here, the contact form reaches a person.

What does SiteScout do, in one breath?

You pick a town and a type of business. SiteScout lists the local businesses, marks the ones with no website, audits the homepages of the rest, and turns any audit into a report with your name on it that you can send to the owner.

Can I try it before creating an account?

Yes. Open the app and a sample town is already loaded, with sample websites you can audit and a report you can build. You can also run 2 searches and 3 live audits a day on real towns without signing up. You are only asked for an account when you save a report.

Where do the business listings come from?

From OpenStreetMap, the open map of the world that volunteers and businesses keep up to date. That is why there is no per-search fee, and why coverage varies: a well-mapped town gives a long, detailed list, and a thinly mapped one gives a shorter list.

How reliable is “No website listed”?

It means OpenStreetMap has no website recorded for that business. Most of the time that is because there is none, but sometimes the map is simply out of date. Take ten seconds to search the business name before you get in touch.

What exactly does the audit check?

Nineteen things on the homepage, in five groups: trust and security, phone friendliness, visibility on Google, speed and build, and whether the business can see its visitors. The What we check page lists every one, what it is worth and how it is scored.

How is the score worked out?

Every check has a weight, from 2 points for a browser tab icon to 14 for https. The score is the points earned divided by the points possible, times 100. Checks that do not apply to a page (image descriptions on a page with no images, for example) are left out rather than counted against it. 90 and up is an A, 80 a B, 70 a C, 60 a D, anything lower an F.

Does SiteScout crawl the whole website?

No. It asks for the homepage once, identifies itself honestly as SiteScoutBot, waits up to 12 seconds, follows at most five redirects and keeps the result for a day so the same site is not fetched twice. The one exception: if the plain http address does not forward to https, it asks the https address once as well.

What if a site blocks automated checks?

Some sites turn away anything that is not a person in a browser. SiteScout reports those as “Could not be checked” and gives no score. It never calls a site down or weak because it was refused.

Whose name is on the report?

Yours. Fill in My agency once (name, logo, phone, email, website and a color) and every report carries it. On Free and Solo a small “Report made with SiteScout” line sits in the footer; on Agency it is removed.

How do I send a report to a business?

Saving a report gives you a private link. Paste it into an email or a message, or use Print or save as PDF. SiteScout drafts the outreach email for you to copy or open in your own email app. It does not send email on your behalf.

What happens when the owner replies?

The report page ends with a short form. When the owner fills it in, the reply is emailed to the address in My agency and saved with the report, and the matching prospect moves to Replied. You can also see how many times the report was opened.

What is the Prospects pipeline?

Five columns: New, Contacted, Replied, Won, Not a fit. Save any business to it, add notes, drag cards between columns, and export everything as a CSV file. It is part of the Solo and Agency plans.

Does it work outside the United States?

Yes. OpenStreetMap covers the world, so you can search any town it knows. How complete the listings are depends on how active local mappers have been.

Is it okay to contact these businesses?

The listings are public information and a polite, specific offer of help is ordinary business. The rules for unsolicited email and calls differ by country and state, though, and following them is your responsibility. A report that is accurate and respectful of the business is the best start.
